Crunchy Veggie Raita – Simplest Indian condiment made with yogurt, some crunchy veggies, basic spices along with fresh garlic and cilantro!!

This is by far the simplest recipe you will find on my blog. It is kinda embarrassing to create blog post for a very simple recipe. But this deliciousness needs to have it’s own space on my blog!! Raita is without any doubt a very versatile Indian condiment/side dish. Core raita ingredient is yogurt along with raw or cooked vegetables, more seldom fruit, and sometimes with boondi. Boondi is nothing but fried droplets of batter made from besan/chickpea flour/gram flour.

Raita is like a side dish or dip. It is often referred to as a condiment. Although unlike traditional spicy western condiments like salt, pepper, mustard and horseradish, raita has a cooling effect. It pairs well with spicy curries and kebabs that are the main highlights of some Indian cuisines. Raita also pairs so well with parathas/flavored flatbread along with chutneys and pickles.

There are many ways to season raita. For example, coriander, roasted cumin seeds, curry leaves, mint, red chili powder, chaat masala and other herbs and spices. This version of raita is seasoned with red chili powder, cumin coriander powder, salt, chaat masala, fresh garlic and cilantro. Edition of crunchy veggies to this raita gives this dish an amazing texture! I like to use a mix of Indian style plain yogurt, non-fat greek yogurt along with some sour cream. It give this raita that perfect creaminess!!

I love making this in a big batch since the longer it sits in the fridge the better it tastes! It makes a perfect meal planning candidate!! Serve it with aloo paratha, biryani, masala bhaat or even with beet phulka, spinach phulka, plain phulka or bhakhri!! This is one of my very favorite side dish!! Ingredients

  • cup Whole Milk Plain Desi Yogurt
  • cup Non Fat Plain Greek Yogurt
  • 1 cup Sour Cream
  • ½ cup Finely Chopped Red Onions
  • ½ cup Finely Chopped Multi Color Peppers
  • ½ cup Finely Chopped Cucumber
  • ½ cup Finely Chopped Tomatoes tomatoes are options as it tend to make the raita a bit runny, so if you prefer less runny consistency, just skip it
  • ¼ cup Finely Chopped Cilantro
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Chaat Masala
  • 1 tsp Roasted Cumin Powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 2 clove Minced Garlic

Instructions

  • Mix all the ingredients listed above.

  • Serve it with biryani, pulao, parathas etc!
