Vegetarian Pizza Hoagie

Hoagie bun slathered with pizza sauce, stuffed with spicy onions pepper mix and Italian vegetarian sausage, topped with provolone cheese and baked to the perfection to make the best vegetarian pizza hoagies!

Ingredients

Veggie Mix

  • 1 Sweet Onion sliced
  • 1 Green bell Pepper Sliced
  • 2 Jalapeños Sliced
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil
  • ¼ tsp Salt
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ¼ tsp Oregano
  • ¼ tsp Black Pepper
  • ¼ tsp Crushed Red Peppers

Vegetarian Sausage Mix (this is faux meat and can be skipped completely)

  • 2 Field Roast SPICY MEXICAN CHIPOTLE plant based sausage or Trader Joe's Plant based Sausage
  • ½ cup Rao's arrabiata sauce
  • ½ tsp Crushed Red Peppers
  • ½ tsp Onion Powder
  • ½ tsp Garlic Powder
  • ¼ tsp Oregano
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • ¼ tsp Salt

Assembly

  • 3 Hoagie Buns
  • 6 Slices Provolone Cheese
  • 1 tbsp Spread Butter
  • 1 tbsp Mix of crushed red peppers, garlic & onion powder, black peppers, salt, oregano

Instructions

Make Veggie Mix

  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil. Saute sliced onions, peppers, jalapeños on high heat to char them. Cook them on high heat until they start having some charred spots on them while still crunchy, for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Once charred, take it off the heat. Add salt, crushed red peppers, black pepper, garlic & onion powder and oregano. Keep it aside.

Make Vegetarian Sausage Mix

  • Heat 1 tbsp of oil and sauté sliced vegan/vegetarian sausage on medium heat for 5-6 minutes until they start getting somewhat crispy.
  • Add arrabiata/pasta/pizza sauce, crushed red peppers, garlic & onion powder, salt, black pepper, oregano. Mix well and simmer for couple of minutes.
  • Take it off the stove and keep it on side.

Assembly

  • Preheat oven on 425°F.
  • Make an incision on hoagie bun to cut open 3/4th way. Leaving one side of the bun still uncut.
  • Butter the buns and spread some pizza sauce on the inside of the bun.
  • Place decent amount of veggie mix on the bun.
  • Place decent amount of vegetarian sausage mix on top of veggie layer. (This step is optional if you are avoiding fake meat)
  • Spread little more sauce on top of sausage mix, skip this step if your sausage mix has good amount of sauce in it.
  • Place couple slices of provolone cheese on each bun. Sprinkle some seasoning.
  • Bake it for 8-9 minutes. After that broil for a minute or two to get some brown spots on the cheese.

  • Take it out of the oven and serve it while hot with ice cold beer, soda or sparkling water!
